A godless Universe

in a godless universe?
It’s just another sugar pill
for when what ails you hurts.
It’s a lack of imagination.
It’s barking at the moon.
It’s a decorative dashboard festoon.
What’s so hard about getting through
another godless day,
without trying to convince yourself
god works in mysterious ways?
It’s a lack of imagination.
It’s pathetic and it’s weak.
It’s lubrication for turning the other cheek.
I can’t tell you how disappointed
I am to hear you say
Jesus is the only medicine
that will get you through your day.
I’d rather suffer in the truth
than deceive myself with a lie.
I’d rather suffer the cold indifference
of a blaze of stars in a midnight sky.
What’s so hard about owning up
to another fairy tale;
a temporary Dr. Feelgood fix
to post your bail?
It doesn’t solve your problems.
It doesn’t make them go away.
It’s another imaginary friend leading you astray.
I can’t tell you how disappointed
I am to hear you say
Jesus is the only medicine
that will get you through your day.
I’d rather suffer in the truth
than deceive myself with a lie.
I’d rather suffer the cold indifference
of a blaze of stars in a midnight sky.
We’re driven to extremes by desperation.
We see god in the constellations.
We become addicted to the medication.
God’s another monster under the bed.
What’s so hard about waking up
in a godless universe?
Once you’ve wrung that old rag dry,
how will you quench your thirst?
It’s a lack of imagination.
It’s tarot card, and rosaries.
It’s a last supper of empty calories.
We’re driven to extremes by desperation.
We see god in the constellations.
We become addicted to the medication.
God’s another monster under the bed.
